About the Course

Ophthalmology houses diseases and pathologies which require either or both medical and surgical attention. Often, over time, the key aspects of undergraduate learning of Ophthalmology are partially lost along with memory of various grades of diseases and their Latin names.

This course focuses on improvement of the art of history taking and various techniques of examination of the eye, along with with emphasis on practical aspects and implications in topics in ophthalmology.

The course is designed to be completed in 3 or 4 months given a weekly time commitment of 4-6 hours. During each week, a set of brief sessions help a ‘student’ review, update and learn about key points of the eye and its functioning, followed by a quick assessment. The course includes a variety of cases for diagnosis and identification. A set of videos are added for those who wish to know more. One hopes that this content package and our instruction design will be found engaging and interesting.

There is a tendency to look upon eye diseases as a separate entity altogether. Eyes are an index of the body and many systemic conditions can be deduced from the pathology of eyes. This CME series also concentrates on such instances where examination of the eyes becomes crucial for a systemic diagnosis.

There is also emphasis laid on ophthalmic emergencies and preventive care in ophthalmology. The courses includes lessons regarding first aid in some emergent conditions.

Towards the end of the course, there is a ‘hands-on’ component that has to be completed by the candidate to qualify for certification. These procedures have to be performed under the supervision of a specialist. There is also a cross index after completion of the course so that the student can refer to clinical conditions and work backwards to understand the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of each.
