PCOS is a recognised entity causing much morbidity in the female population, yet still remains an enigma for the practising clinician. In this short course, a leading awarded practitioner presents all the known and understood aspects of PCOS, including metabolic basis and pathogenesis. The expert faculty also clarifies subtler aspects of the condition and updates the learner on the latest approaches to patient investigation and management. Several Case discussions are used to illustrate the presentation and varieties of this disease in a clinical practice set-up.
Introduction to the condition in the public morbidity. Ovarian anatomy histolgy, development, and functions.
Ovarian hormones: estrogen, synthesis, secretion transport, excretion; progesterone and its functions. Causes of PCOS and its pathophysiology.
Clinical presentation of PCOS- symptoms including the typical acne, obesity with its parameters, GTT abnormalities etc. plus Stein-Leventhal syndrome components.
Detailed pathophysiology described with control loops of the hypothalamo-hypopituitary-ovarian axis. Diagnosis:laboratory tests, imaging. Basis and approach of treatment/management and up to date protocols and options.
Complications of PCOs and its Rx. Infertility overview and its common causal factors -ovarian, tubal, uterine, cervical. Fertilization sequence. PCOs implication in infertility and co-relation with management approach. Role of Laparoscopy. Case scenarios, described against the pathophysiology background. Postpartum PCOS- C/F, monitoring, and management goals, public health importance. Target approach for interventions. Case of metabolic syndrome for discussion as a differential diagnosis.
